Cei de la NASA au observat ca circumferinta Lunii s-a contractat cu circa 100 de metrii in ultimii 30 de ani, ‘zbarcindu-se ca un mar vechi’. Specialistii explica fenomenul prin racirea interna a singurului satelit natural al Pamantului, relateaza AFP.
Revista americana a publicat imagini ale satelitului captate de NASA, care scot la iveala modificari ale suprafetei Lunii nedetectate pana acum. Thomas Watters, de la Muzeul national al aerului si spatiului, sustine ca aceste concluzii au fost trase datorita fotografiilor facute cu obiective puternice plasate la bordul sondei spatiale de recunoastere lunara (LRO), puse de NASA pe orbita in jurul Lunii in iunie 2009.
Fotografiile scot la iveala existenta unor incretituri pe solul Lunii, care sunt de fapt niste falii suprapuse situate in principal in regiunile muntoase lunare de inaltime medie. Ele arata ca Luna se contracta ca un pod in timpul iernii, din cauza frigului.
