Potrivit presei, el a fost implicat in multe scandaluri legale de traffic de droguri, cu contrabanda cu tigari si alcool, fiind considerat “creierul traficului cu tigari” in vama Giurgiu. A fost partener de afaceri cu controversatul om de afaceri, Costel Bobic, si s-a implicat in tranzitul pe teritoriul tarii noastre a drogurilor venite din Turcia, via Bulgaria. In 2003, Ungureanu a fost arestat si condamnat la puscarie pentru trafic cu tigari. Dupa ce iesit din puscarie s-a hirotonisit si a devenit preot la o biserica din Giurgiu. De altfel, sediul Episcopiei din Giurgiu este un imbol achizitionat de biserica de la ungureanu, contra sumei de 750 000 de euro.
